Asking the Right Questions

Hello all,

My dad has recently got a new job, and the other day he was talking to someone at work about his family and kids, which was pretty normal and usual, since he?s the new guy. He mentioned that I had been wanting to get into the film industry, or at least get a job as a director, and this person he was talking to mentioned that her son is a director at the Beeb, and has made a few episodes of Casualty and Doctors ? no great shakes in Hollywood, but it is an important step on the ladder, which, it seems to me is the hardest and most difficult step of all.

Plans were arranged, and this dude is going to phone/write me in the next few weeks, and I really don?t want to blow it. Neither do I want him to ring up and tell me a load of stuff I already know about submitting stuff to the that talent search thing Auntie has going, and then never hear from him again.

Does anybody have any advice on how I should exploit this contact (such as it is) properly, or put another way, in the same situation what questions would you ask this guy? My background is that I left university in May with a degree and HND in Media Studies, and have only two completed scripts, only one of which is anywhere near feature length.

all I can say is be totally honest with him.
Get it clear in your mind what sort of job you want eventually and talk about it with him, he will probably only give you some advice, I doubt he will offer you a job (if thats what you are expecting.)
Be as professional as you can be, and dont try and impress him with enthusiasm. Impress him with the work you have already done and the kind of work you want to do in the future...
With an HND in media studies and a couple of scripts you have already show a great deal of commitment to the subject.
Prove to him that there is plenty more where that came from. Talk about what you can do, not what you cant. Perhaps he will remember you when a colleague is looking for a runner.

i worked at the beeb for ten months , unfortunatly i had signed a conflict of interest agreement which made things diffilcult somewhat but

they are just normal people

go in with the attitude ill scratch your back if you scratch mine

a lesson i learnt about business many moons ago is , when dealing with other people for your gain treat it like you are playing cards. you want a strong hand, so what cards can you deal to play ?
ie do your research etc etc

BUT!!!!!! be yourself AND BE HONEST ! that will earn a lot of respect in the long term
